Greenhouse Gas Inventories
As the saying goes, you cannot manage what you don’t measure. For managing and mitigating climate change, one of the most fundamental measurements is a periodic inventory of the problem’s root cause: greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities. Whether at the organizational level or the community-wide level, there are a number of benefits to conducting a GHG inventory:
Identify the sectors, sources, and activities responsible for greenhouse gas emissions
Understand the emission and removal trends
Understand link between environmental pollution and effects to sources of pollution
An inventory is the foundation to developing cost-effective mitigation strategies and policy
To monitor progress towards goals
To inform stakeholders and the public
paleBLUEdot develops GHG emissions inventories at several levels, including product, business / organizational, and community-wide. Our inventories are based on the GHG Protocol, an accounting and reporting standard developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). For community wide inventories, our efforts are based on the ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability GHG Protocol. Assessments typically include emissions from all sectors of your carbon footprint, including electricity and natural gas consumption, transportation, water use, and municipal solid waste.
